International Talent Dominates Historic Santa Cruz Race

In a remarkable display of athletic excellence and breaking down barriers in competitive sports, Latvia's Arturs Medveds and Ethiopia's Atsede Tesema claimed decisive victories at Sunday's Wharf to Wharf race in Santa Cruz, both setting course records on the newly modified 5.91-mile route.

Historic Victory Highlights Global Athletic Excellence

Medveds, a recent Cal Baptist University graduate, completed the course in an impressive 27 minutes and 3 seconds, outpacing defending champion Evert Silva and Olympic medalist Galen Rupp. His victory represents a significant achievement in breaking historical barriers in American distance running.

Women's Division Showcases International Talent

Ethiopia's Atsede Tesema, the 2016 Boston Marathon champion, dominated the women's division with a record-setting time of 31:01. Her remarkable comeback after hip surgery demonstrates the resilience and determination that characterizes elite athletes.

Community Impact and Local Achievement

The race, which attracted 16,000 participants, showcased both international excellence and local talent. UC Santa Cruz grad student Sean Riedel emerged as the top local male finisher, while Felton's Azalea Groleau led local female competitors, embodying the event's spirit of inclusive competition.

"It means a lot to win this race, especially with a guy like Rupp here," said Medveds, highlighting the significance of his achievement against world-class competition.
