Fantasy Football Week 1: Start These 3 Players, Bench These 3 Stars
The NFL season is finally here, and with it comes the annual ritual of fantasy football lineup anxiety. Week One is always the trickiest: your draft board says one thing, but matchups, injuries, and offseason moves tell another story. Here's a breakdown of three players you should confidently start and three you might want to leave on the bench this week.
Start: Tyler Shough vs. Detroit Lions
New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has one of the most favorable matchups of the week. The over/under for the Saints-Lions game sits at 49.5, the second-highest of the week. That number reflects Detroit's high-powered offense, but also their severely depleted secondary.
The Lions will be without both starting safeties, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, due to knee and Achilles injuries. They also released starting cornerback Terrion Arnold this offseason after he faced multiple felony charges. That leaves Detroit with aging safeties, a 29-year-old cornerback, and a fifth-round rookie at the other spot. Shough should have plenty of opportunities to exploit this weak unit. If you drafted him as your QB2 and your QB1 has a tough matchup, this is the week to make the switch.
Start: Houston Texans Defense vs. Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen can be Superman, but the Houston Texans defense has been his kryptonite since DeMeco Ryans took over as head coach. In two regular-season meetings, Allen has struggled mightily. In 2024, he went 9-for-30 for 131 yards and a touchdown. The following year, he threw zero touchdowns and two interceptions.
Texans edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter each recorded two sacks in that most recent matchup. There's no reason to believe they can't repeat that performance at home on Sunday. Start the Houston defense with confidence this week.
Sit: DJ Moore vs. Houston Texans
In that same game, Bills wide receiver DJ Moore might be better off on your bench. The Texans have not only elite pass rushers, but also a tough secondary led by All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. Back in 2024, Moore faced Houston and was held to 53 yards on six catches.
Moore is also coming off the worst season of his career, with career lows in receptions and receiving yards. He said during the preseason that his chemistry with Allen is good, which suggests last year's struggles were more about the Chicago Bears' situation than his own decline. Even so, this week is unlikely to be a breakout spot. Look elsewhere at wide receiver.
Sit: Quinshon Judkins vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins is in a classic good-player, bad-situation scenario. The Browns are a mess, with arguably the worst starting quarterback in the league in Deshaun Watson. Cleveland added talent at wide receiver in the first two rounds of the 2026 draft, but expecting immediate production from rookies is risky.
As a result, Judkins will likely face plenty of stacked boxes against the Jacksonville Jaguars unless the Browns prove they have a passing game worth respecting. Jacksonville allowed the fewest rushing yards in 2025 and returns that entire front seven. All signs point to a tough first week for Judkins, possibly single-digit fantasy points.
Start: Tre Tucker vs. Miami Dolphins
With All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers ruled out with a knee injury, Tre Tucker becomes the default number one option for the Las Vegas Raiders against the Miami Dolphins. While this is a bad-on-bad matchup, Tucker showed last year he can produce against weaker defenses.
In Week Three of 2025, Tucker posted a monster 9/145/3 stat line against the Washington Commanders. He had a few more solid performances in the first half of the season, but fell off dramatically in the second half. In his defense, some of the teams he faced down the stretch were the Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs, all of which allowed under 200 passing yards per game. The Dolphins are nowhere near that caliber of defense, which should mean playmaking opportunities and double-digit fantasy points for Tucker on Sunday.
Sit: Patrick Mahomes vs. Denver Broncos
The Kansas City Chiefs got the band back together this offseason, but they probably won't play their greatest hits against this stout Denver defense. Patrick Mahomes had his best years, including two MVP campaigns, when Eric Bieniemy was offensive coordinator. Bieniemy is returning to Kansas City in that role after three years away.
The Chiefs also added Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker to the backfield to give Mahomes a respectable run game again. While Kansas City will likely be fine in the long run, it will probably take another week for them to look like their old selves. The Broncos' defense was elite last year, finishing second in yards allowed and third in points allowed. With all those starting defensive pieces returning, led by two-time All-Pro Patrick Surtain Jr., more of the same is likely.
Mahomes is also coming off a torn ACL, so he will likely need a few weeks to get his feet back under him. Fantasy owners are surely anxious to get him back in the lineup, but that Monday night matchup has the makings of a low-scoring affair.
Making the Tough Calls Early
Exciting times are here again, as the NFL and fantasy football have returned. Even though we're just getting underway, those feelings may also include stress, as critical decisions have to be made already. Most owners probably feel the Week One starters are in place based on draft position, but sometimes that's not the case after further review.
So much of fantasy football is about making the tough choice, even if that means benching a player you took in the first five or six rounds. Pay attention to the information in front of you, as an early-season loss can ultimately make all the difference. Good luck to all this year, and happy Week One!
