House of the Dragon Ending: The True Cost of Absolute Power
The Dance of the Dragons does not end with a triumphant ruler. Instead, the Targaryen civil war concludes with systemic collapse, the death of the ruling class, and a traumatized child inheriting a broken realm. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and King Aegon II both perish in their pursuit of the Iron Throne, proving that absolute power destroys those who wield it.
What Happens to Rhaenyra and Aegon II?
As House of the Dragon moves into its third season, the war for the realm accelerates. Queen Rhaenyra finds the Iron Throne within her grasp after Alicent Hightower agrees to open the gates of King's Landing. Meanwhile, King Aegon II is in ruin. Scarred by burns from the Battle at Rook's Rest and betrayed by his own brother Aemond, who rules as Regent and claims the king has abdicated, Aegon is a ruler in name only. However, the book Fire & Blood, which serves as the source material, reveals that neither claimant survives the conflict.
Rhaenyra's fate was actually revealed years ago in Game of Thrones. King Joffrey Baratheon told Margaery Tyrell that Rhaenyra was killed by her brother's dragon, which consumed her while her son watched. Before this brutal end, Rhaenyra briefly rules from King's Landing but is forced to retreat to Dragonstone.
Aegon II ultimately returns to the capital after Rhaenyra's death, but his cause is doomed. The armies fighting in Rhaenyra's name, including forces led by Lord Cregan Stark, march toward a defenseless King's Landing. When Aegon refuses to surrender, his own advisors poison him. The system eats its own.
Who Takes the Iron Throne After the Civil War?
With both monarchs dead and most of their heirs slaughtered, the realm turns to the next generation. Rhaenyra's male heir, Aegon the Younger, takes the throne as King Aegon III. He is around eleven years old in the books, though the show may adjust his age. To force a fragile unification, the young king is married to Princess Jaehaera, the surviving daughter of Aegon II.
Lord Cregan Stark briefly serves as Hand of the King before returning to Winterfell, leaving a child to govern a fractured society. Aegon III is a monarch scarred by the trauma of watching his mother devoured, a stark reminder that the costs of war are always borne by the innocent.
Why the Targaryens Lose the Dance of the Dragons
Technically, Rhaenyra's line continues, making her the posthumous winner. Her second son with Daemon, Viserys, eventually inherits the throne. But calling this a victory ignores the reality of systemic collapse. The Targaryen family is nearly extinct, with only Aegon, Viserys, Jaehaera, Baela, and Rhaena surviving the war.
The most catastrophic loss is the dragons. Only four survive the Dance, and the last dragon in Westeros dies roughly two decades later. The loss of these creatures strips the Targaryens of the unchecked leverage that kept them in power. The civil war sets the dynasty on a slow path to ruin, ending with Robert's Rebellion 150 years later. When institutions rely on singular sources of dominance rather than collective stability, their collapse is inevitable.
Does Rhaenyra Win the Iron Throne?
No. Rhaenyra takes King's Landing but later retreats to Dragonstone, where she is killed by Aegon II's dragon. Her son eventually takes the throne, but she does not survive the war.
Does Aegon II Survive the Dance of the Dragons?
No. After Rhaenyra's death, Aegon II rules for several months. When Northern armies march on the capital, he refuses to surrender and is poisoned by his own men.
Who Rules Westeros After the Civil War?
Aegon the Younger, the son of Rhaenyra and Daemon, becomes King Aegon III. He is a child, forced into a political marriage with his cousin Jaehaera to unify the warring factions.
