The Iberia Parish Main Library is taking a bold step toward environmental sustainability and digital inclusion through a new electronics recycling partnership launching this Saturday. Working with the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC), the initiative aims to transform discarded technology into opportunities for underserved communities.

Bridging the Digital Divide Through Sustainable Tech

The event, scheduled for August 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., represents a growing trend of sustainable technology initiatives that combine environmental responsibility with social impact. Library Director Marjorie Hills emphasizes the dual benefit of the program.

"They recycle these things and give out refurbished items to people who can use it - other non-profit organizations and families who can't afford computers," explains Hills.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to expand digital access across communities, while ensuring responsible disposal of electronic waste.

Accepted Electronics for Recycling

  • Computers (laptops and desktops)
  • Monitors and computer accessories
  • Smartphones and telephone systems
  • Gaming consoles and accessories
  • Networking equipment and security systems
  • Tablets, e-readers, and mobile devices

The program emphasizes safe disposal practices, particularly important given the rise in cybersecurity concerns and digital safety. All data-containing devices will undergo secure wiping procedures.

Environmental and Social Impact

By diverting electronics from landfills while providing refurbished technology to schools, nonprofits, and families in need, the initiative addresses both environmental sustainability and digital equity challenges facing communities today.
