Speed, Consistency, and a New Playbook: The Path to Playing Time for Auburn's Bryce Cain
As Auburn football enters a new era under head coach Alex Golesh, the wide receiver room is undergoing a major transformation. With five new receivers brought in from South Florida, the competition for playing time is fierce. For the three holdovers from the 2025 roster — Bryce Cain, Sam Turner, and Erick Smith — the challenge is clear: adapt quickly or risk being left behind.
What Does Bryce Cain Need to Do to Earn Playing Time?
According to wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Kodi Burns, the answer is simple: consistency. “My message to Bryce is he's extremely talented, and you've been blessed. Your superpower is speed. God gave you speed, so you've got to use that,” Burns said. “He's another guy that this system is new, and he's continuing to grow every single day. He hasn't got where we want him to get to yet, but I have patience and I have belief in Bryce Cain.”
Cain, the only wide receiver remaining from Auburn's 2024 recruiting class after Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson entered the transfer portal in January, redshirted his freshman year. Last fall, he recorded four receptions for 25 yards and added a 31-yard kick return on his only attempt. Burns sees potential in Cain's speed and special teams value, but stresses the need for more reps and consistency in the high-tempo system.
“He gives you value in the return game on special teams, and he is talented. He just needs reps. In this system, when you play at the tempo at which we do, it's really tough on young players and new players that haven't been in the system. He's done a great job so far. I just need Bryce Cain to be more consistent, and I think he will,” Burns added.
How Are Other Returning Receivers Facing the Competition?
Sam Turner, a 4-star recruit in the Tigers' 2025 class, has been hindered by injuries throughout his first year on the Plains. Burns noted that Turner brings a “dog mentality” but still needs to show consistency. “Sam has that mindset that he brings that dog mentality every single day. Obviously, being a little bit behind some of the other guys, he continues to grow, and I do think Sam is hungry, does a great job of coming up here, getting extra work on his own,” Burns said. “Right now, in fall camp, throughout the first three days, man, he's been really impressive. He's got to continue to grow. He's got to be more consistent, and as he continues to get more consistent, I think he'll be more confident. And we need a confident Sam Turner because when he's confident, he's going to be a really good player.”
Erick Smith, the third returning receiver, faces a similar uphill battle. The trio's ability to learn the playbook and stay focused in meetings will be critical as fall camp progresses.

Auburn returns to practice on Tuesday for its second week of fall camp. Wednesday will see the team practice in full pads, and Friday marks the first scrimmage of camp inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. These sessions will be crucial for Cain, Turner, and Smith to prove they belong in the rotation.
